Annual Rehabilitation Camp for Mine Survivors Completed

31.10.2012
This year's Summer Camp for Tajik Mine Victims has taken place in the Sanatorium of “Sang-chashma”, Almosi village. The Opening Ceremony was held on Wednesday 3rd October with the presence of the conveners and all the participants.

Greetings were received from the Tajikistan Mine Action Centre (TMAC), the Tajikistan Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munitions (TCBL&CM), the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD), the Tajik State University, and the Afghanistan Landmine Survivors Organization, all parties involved in making this year’s summer camp such a great event for more than 100 landmine survivors from Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

For the first time, this year's rehabilitation camp brought together landmine survivors from Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The guests from Afghanistan have shared their experiences from their own country and will be giving Tajik counterparts their advice for the planned peer-to-peer support scheme for Persons with Disabilities (PWD), which has been established in the disability sector of Afghanistan before. The annual rehabilitation camp for mine survivors has been organized since 2005 and has provided the victims with special medical/physical treatments and psychosocial rehabilitation.

The ability to socialize with other survivors from their country has created a feeling of community and empowerment among the survivors, which allows them to overcome certain hardships of their daily lives.
