TMAC Victim Assistance Team Attends Intersessional Meeting in Geneva

07.06.2012
The Tajikistan Mine Action Centre sent its Victim Assistance team to the intersessional meeting of States Parties to the Ottawa convention, held in Geneva (Switzerland) from 21st to 25th May 2012. Reykhan Muminova (TMAC VA Officer) and Zainiddin Rasulov (VA Assistant) were accompanied by Abduqodir Ismatov, the Secretary of the Government of Tajikistan’s Commission on Implementation of International Humanitarian Law (CIIHL).

The intersessional meeting of the States Parties to the Ottawa convention serves as a platform for mine/UXO affected states to report on progress made towards the commitments under the mine/UXO ban treaty (Ottawa treaty) and to enhance the international network among mine action stakeholders. This year, TMAC sent its victim assistance team to the meeting, as an acknowledgement of the continued efforts in Tajikistan to advocate and support mine survivors in their daily lives.

The VA Officer of TMAC held a presentation on the achievements of the Tajik Victim Assistance program and the improvement of the legal environment for mine survivors and Persons with disabilities in Tajikistan. Addressing the audience, the VA officer emphasized the commitment of the Tajik Mine Action Programme in advocating Tajikistan’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the efforts undertaken by TMAC to build up capacities of mine survivors in Tajikistan for self-help in the form of strong civil society organizations.
