TMAC IMSMA Officer Participates in IMSMA NG Seminar in Sweden

17.05.2012
The IMSMA Officer of TMAC, Abdulmain Karimov, has participated in the Information Management and IMSMA NG Administrator Level 1 & 2 course in Sando, Sweden, organized by MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) and conducted by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian De-mining (GICHD). The seminar has covered all the aspects of information management in mine action and was primarily aimed at deepening the understanding of information needs and the role of the IMSMA NG (New Generation) system.

A special emphasis was also put on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in mine action and its role in accessing, retrieving and disseminating mine action data for supporting the decision making procedures in national mine action programs. TMAC is in a stage of transition from IMSMA Legacy to the IMSMA NG system. Therefore, this specific training course equipped TMAC with the knowledge to make this transition as smooth as possible. All issues related toinformation management as well as to operational challenges could be addressed during the training. Furthermore, the course covered other advanced techniques to perform detailed analysis of mine action data and and produce appropriate reports.

The seminar in Sweden provided a unique opportunity to meet fellow IM Officers from various mine action programs, including the experts from GICHD. The exchange of knowledge and experience as well as the discussion of existing country specific challenges were at the heart of the learning experience. In conclusion, the course provided a wide overview of information management in mine action and how the IMSMA NG could better help the Tajikistan Mine Action Programme in decision making procedures, in order to be more efficient and effective in its daily operations as well as its long-term planning.
