Mine Victims Needs Assessment Rasht Valley

03.05.2012
The TMAC Victim Assistance unit undertook a field trip to the Rasht Valley region, in order to update Tajikistan’s countrywide database on mine/UXO victims. The aim of the trip was to visit all families in the Gharm and Nurobod districs, who have been affected by the loss or disability of one of its members.

In order for TMAC to streamline the coordination of its victim assistance and demining operations programme, it is instrumental to have at one’s command precise and up-to-date information on all mine victims throughout the country. The trip was not only used to update the TMAC database on the circumstances of the accident but also to systematically capture the exact needs of the mine/UXO accident survivors with the help of a needs assessment questionnaire.

The results of this survey will help the Tajikistan Mine Action Programme and all its partners to better coordinate and prioritize their mine action activities. The Mine Victim Assistance Pillar in Tajikistan coordinates all countrywide efforts to assist survivors (approx. 500 in total) with the challenges they face in their everyday lives, starting with medical help (prosthesis) and including psychosocial rehabilitation and economic assistance. A special focus also concerns the support to advocacy campaigns in favour of Tajikistan's accession to the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
