Fourth Mine Action Day celebrated by Tajikistan Mine Action Centre

Dushanbe, the capital of the Republic of Tajikistan has celebrated the International Mine Action Day the fourth time. Official Opening was launched on the 3rd of April, 2009 in Kohi Vahdat palace. The High Representatives of the UNDP/Tajikistan, the Ambassador of the OSCE in Dushanbe, Officials of the Commission on Implementation International Humanitarian Law (CIIHL) under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Ministries, Embassies, non-governmental organizations and some landmine survivors from the remote areas of the country have taken part in that event.

This Day has reminded that the people of Tajikistan, namely population of 24 districts still live in fear of landmines, explosive remnants of war and cluster munitions. Their hazard make difficult the livelihoods and block access to the land, plantation, gardening, pasture’s paths, grass collection and basic services. We should not forget that this Day is also an occasion to attract the attention of the Tajik Community to make common efforts on fighting the scourge of landmines, explosive remnants of war and cluster bombs. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of all significant Donors – UNDP, OSCE, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Canada, German, Belgium, Sweden, Japan, ICRC, United Kingdom, US Colleague, ICBL - we have reached real achievements in our mine action efforts.

The main event of the Mine Action in Dushanbe was opening the Mine Action Achievement Exhibition in Tajikistan that demonstrated the description of all Programs, mainly, Mine Clearance, Mine Victim, Assistance, and Mine Risk Education. Display of landmines and UXOs were set up in the hall and demonstration of the dog deminers and deminers with the uniform attracted attention of the guests.

Invitation of some Landmine Survivors showed the impact of the small grant fundraising on their self-development and on the rehabilitation that was provided by TMAC the last years. National Companies of Tajikistan Mass Media were widely involved and announced about commemoration of the Day. A Drawing Corner was organized by the students of Dushanbe Art College and their ready products on Mine Action have been demonstrated. Besides, events in 22 districts have been arranged by 66 MRE Volunteers on raising attitude to support progress of the Mine Action in Tajikistan. The Articles written by TMAC Program Staff were issued throughout the world and the country mine action websites, republican papers. Radio Broadcasting aired the process of the Mine Action Day. Districts journalists provided articles to the local papers.

Successful Tajik Mine Action is a team work and we are proud to be a part of this team.  We know that we work to contribute in the safety of the environment and communities free of mines in our country and we make an appeal to other countries of the Central Asia to recognize the importance of the Mine Action.
