Cluster bombs and submunitions in Tajikistan. The Rasht Valley, central Taji-kistan, is surrounded by steep hills and snow-capped mountains. During the civil war, some places on the high ground were defended with earthworks and trenches, the remains of which are still visible. These were defended with anti-personnel mines. During the war, the mountains all along the Rasht Valley were cluster bombed with ShOAB and AO submunitions. The mountains around Sagirdasht were also heavily mined, and the heavily cluster bombed. ShOAB and AO submunitions litter the hillsides. The cluster bombs used are large bombs which burst open in the air and spread many small bombs - submunitions - over a wide area. Many submunitions fell on snow or soft ground and did not explode. Every year there are injuries or deaths when people stumble across them as they cut mountain hay or move their livestock over the hillside. Tourists and hikers should know what mines and submunitions are and should avoid them. To learn more about the submunitions used in Tajikistan, click on the link below.

DO NOT PICK THESE UP - NEVER DROP OR THROW THEM - NEVER PUT THEM ON A CAMPFIRE OR TRY TO TAKE THEM APART.                                                                                      To read about the problem in the Rasht valley, click here.
